For the first time in recent years, Plateau State was able to organize an open basketball camp, providing a level playing field for all eligible U-18 athletes to earn their spot. This transparent and inclusive process allowed fresh talent to shine and it was clear from the start that something special was brewing—especially among the boys.
While the Plateau female team had to navigate previous setbacks, including missing out on the National Sports Festival (NSF) in Ogun they remained active with consistent training. The coaching crew stayed committed to their development anticipating the restart of the Zenith League—now officially scheduled.
The CDS U-18 Games invitation couldn’t have come at a better time, serving as both motivation and a much-needed competitive outlet. Even with some missing pieces in their roster, the girls stepped up with heart and determination. What was initially a developmental mission might now end with a podium finish.
For the male team, however, the atmosphere was different. The energy, the depth of skill and the hunger were undeniable.
The camp was brimming with young athletes ready to prove themselves, so much so that narrowing the group to a final 12-man roster was a tough task for the coaching staff. There were even a few talented players who could easily have made the team in different circumstances.
Still, the chosen squad didn’t disappoint. They came into the CDS U-18 Games not just to participate, but to compete and their march to the finals is evidence of their preparation and potential. This group represents more than current success—they embody the future of Plateau basketball.
But beyond the wins and highlights, this journey is best described as a faith project. A symbolic beginning for the newly inaugurated board, and a step in the right direction for basketball development in the state.
It wasn’t the easiest road. The invitation to the competition came with its challenges, but with passion and purpose, the Plateau contingent made it count.
This experience—both for the boys and girls—has laid a solid foundation. The U-18 Games served as a springboard, sparking belief, building exposure and reaffirming the value of grassroots investment.
As the competition concludes, Plateau Basketball walks away not just with results on the scoreboard, but with renewed vision. The journey has only just begun.
We extend our gratitude to the organizers of the CDS U-18 Games for creating this invaluable platform and we look forward to continued partnerships and future participation.
