NBA Approves Sale of Majority Lakers Ownership to Mark Walter

In a historic move, the NBA Board of Governors has unanimously approved the sale of a majority interest in the Los Angeles Lakers to billionaire investor Mark Walter, marking a significant change in ownership for one of the league’s most iconic franchises.

The transaction, announced on October 30, 2025, is expected to close soon. Despite the sale, the Buss family, who have controlled the Lakers since Dr. Jerry Buss purchased the team in 1979, will retain a minority interest and remain involved with the franchise. Current Lakers Governor Jeanie Buss will continue in her leadership role for at least the next five years following the sale.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver praised the decision, emphasizing Walter’s long-standing relationship with the league and his leadership in sports ownership.

“Mark Walter has a long association with our leagues, having served as a minority owner of the Lakers and as the principal owner of the WNBA’s Sparks for more than a decade,” Silver said. “As Mark assumes his role as majority owner of the Lakers, I have no doubt he will be a committed steward of the team and a great addition to our league.”

Silver also expressed deep gratitude to Jeanie Buss and the Buss family for more than four decades of leadership and commitment to the NBA.

“While this historic transaction transfers the Buss family’s majority interest in the Lakers, I am thrilled that Jeanie will remain the team’s Governor and an active and engaged member of our league,” he added.

This marks a monumental chapter in Lakers history, as the Buss family’s 46-year reign comes to a symbolic close. Under their ownership, the Lakers captured 11 NBA championships, built a global brand, and became synonymous with basketball.
