The Tech Boys Are Back: Sporting Lagos Secure NPFL Promotion

Sporting Lagos secured their return to the Nigeria Premier Football League after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Osun United at the Lanre Leke Stadium in Ileogbo on Thursday.

The Tech Boys went into the fixture knowing only a win would do. Akwa United were just a point behind and also pushing for a return to the top flight, meaning anything less than three points would have handed the promotion ticket to the former champions.

Forward Alex Leme proved the difference, scoring the decisive goal in the 17th minute after a precise assist from strike partner Aliyu Baba. It was a calm, composed finish that belied the enormous pressure of the occasion.

What followed was a nervy defensive display, made all the more dramatic by controversial officiating. Osun United were awarded a first-half penalty, but the effort rattled the crossbar, much to the relief of the travelling Sporting Lagos supporters, many of whom were locked outside the stadium and followed the action from the tops of their buses.

As the game wore on, a mysterious eight minutes of stoppage time tested every nerve. Throughout it all, goalkeeper Clinton Lawal was immense, producing a series of crucial saves before capping his performance with a stunning low dive deep into stoppage time that denied Osun United a certain equaliser.

At the final whistle, Sporting Lagos topped the NNL Conference B table with 36 points, just one ahead of Akwa United, who also won their final fixture but could not do enough.

The promotion made Sporting Lagos the third team confirmed for the NPFL this season, joining Doma United and Inter Lagos. It also meant Lagos State would have three top-flight clubs next season, Sporting Lagos, Inter Lagos, and Ikorodu City, setting the stage for what promised to be a fierce city rivalry.

The Tech Boys were relegated in 2024 after just one NPFL campaign. Two seasons in the second division, and they were back. This time, they would be hoping to make it stick.
