WAFCON Final: Hosts Morocco Face Nigeria in Battle for African Glory

The stage is set for a title-deciding clash as hosts Morocco go head-to-head with nine-time champions Nigeria in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The two teams come into Saturday’s showdown with unfinished business and a point to prove.

Morocco, who were losing finalists in the last edition, are determined to make history on home soil. Meanwhile, the Super Falcons of Nigeria, the most successful team in the competition’s history, are on a mission after being knocked out by the Atlas Lionesses in the semifinals of the 2022 tournament and also seeking their 10th title.

The hosts sealed their place in the final after a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Ghana, following a 1-1 draw after extra time. Having suffered heartbreak in the 2022 final loss to South Africa’s Banyana Banyana, Morocco will be desperate to avoid another bitter ending. For Jorge Vlida and his side, this is not just about winning, it’s about redemption.

The Super Falcons have arguably looked like the most dominant side of the tournament, conceding just one goal on their road to the final. Their ruthless 5-0 demolition of Zambia in the quarterfinals was a statement of intent, especially in a tie many expected to be tightly contested.

In the semifinals, Nigeria showed they had so much to prove to overcome South Africa 2-1, avenging their 2022 group stage defeat to Banyana Banyana and setting up another shot at the title. With a squad filled with both experienced players like Rasheedat Ajibade, Asleigh Plumptre and exciting young talents like Folashade Ijamilusi, coach Madugu will be confident heading into Saturday’s clash.

This final is not just about silverware, it’s about pride, history, and legacy. For Morocco, it’s a chance to win their first-ever WAFCON title and complete a fairytale run in front of their fans. For Nigeria, it's about reclaiming dominance and avenging recent wounds.
